Die Wahl von Sesselmann markiert einen Meilenstein, da bisher keine andere AfD-Kandidatin oder -Kandidat ein derartiges kommunales Spitzenamt in Deutschland innehatte. Die Protestpartei verzeichnete in den letzten Wochen eine steigende Zustimmung in den Umfragen auf Bundesebene und etablierte sich oft als zweitstärkste Kraft hinter der Union.


Trotz der Einstufung der AfD als rechtsextremistischer Verdachtsfall durch den Verfassungsschutz schaffte es die Partei, in Sonneberg einen bedeutenden Erfolg zu erzielen. Die Wahl des AfD-Politikers wird als Signal der Unzufriedenheit interpretiert und wirft Fragen zur politischen Landschaft und zur deutschen Einheit auf.


Die Wahlbeteiligung in Sonneberg mag aufgrund der geringen Bevölkerungszahl des Landkreises mit rund 57.000 Einwohnern und 48.000 Wahlberechtigten relativ niedrig erscheinen, dennoch zeigt das Ergebnis, dass die AfD auch in kleinen Gemeinden erfolgreich sein kann.


Der Sieg von Sesselmann wird von einigen politischen Kräften als alarmierend angesehen, während andere den Ausdruck der demokratischen Meinungsfreiheit betonen.
