Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse dominates the box office, surpassing Elemental and The Flash
The animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse claimed the top spot at the weekend box office, grossing $19.3 million. It outperformed Pixar's Elemental, which earned $18.4 million and The Flash, which experienced a significant drop, finishing in third place with $15.2 million.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, now in its fourth week of release domestically, has generated $317.1 million in domestic revenue and a total of $560.3 million worldwide. The film features Shameik Moore as the teenage superhero Miles Morales and initially debuted at the top of the box office on June 2.
Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian commended the film's achievement, stating that it is rare for a film like this to reclaim the No. 1 spot. He attributed its success to the movie's quality and its ability to stand out in a competitive and crowded summer movie market.
Following closely behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Elemental secured second place for the second consecutive week, earning $18.5 million. However, its $29 million opening last week marked Pixar's weakest three-day debut to date.
The Flash, a DC and Warner Bros. blockbuster starring Ezra Miller, experienced the largest decline of the week, with a 72 percent drop from its $55 million opening to a $15.2 million intake. This decline surpassed drops seen in other underperforming DC adaptations, such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which dropped 69 percent, and Black Adam, which dropped 59 percent.
The Flash has accumulated $210.9 million worldwide, with $87 million coming from domestic earnings and $123.3 million from international markets. Despite costing $200 million to produce, the film's commercial viability had been a subject of speculation due to Miller's run-ins with the law.
According to Dergarabedian, the success of a film like Elemental is not solely determined by its opening weekend, while films like The Flash face multifaceted challenges that can be difficult to overcome.
In fourth place, the new Jennifer Lawrence comedy No Hard Feelings debuted with $15.1 million in domestic box office earnings for Sony.
