"MLB Investigates Social Media Posts Concerning Wander Franco; Rays Maintain 'Close Contact' with League"

The Tampa Bay Rays have responded to recent social media allegations involving their shortstop, Wander Franco, in a statement released on Sunday. The team acknowledged being "made aware" of these posts and revealed that Major League Baseball (MLB) is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.

In the statement released, the Rays conveyed, "As the game unfolded today, our attention was drawn to the circulating social media posts concerning Wander Franco." Demonstrating our unwavering commitment, we are giving this matter the highest level of consideration and maintaining an ongoing dialogue with Major League Baseball as they meticulously scrutinize the unfolding situation."

Following the Rays' loss to the Guardians on Sunday, manager Kevin Cash addressed the situation. While acknowledging the speculation, Cash refrained from providing further comments. He clarified that Franco's absence from the lineup that day resulted from a scheduled day off and not from any other underlying issues.

In place of Franco, the Rays opted to field debutant infielder Osleivis Basabe, resulting in a loss against the Guardians. The team had specifically recalled Basabe prior to the game, concurrently demoting lefty Josh Fleming.

As the Rays departed for San Francisco ahead of their series against the Giants, Franco did not travel with the team on the plane, as reported by ESPN. Tampa Bay's three-game series at Oracle Park is set to commence on Monday night.

At just 22 years old, Franco signed an 11-year contract extension with the Rays in November 2021. This season marked his inaugural selection to the All-Star Game, and he currently boasts a batting average of .281/.344/.475 across 112 games.
